Barely 12 years old, Padmanabh Singh, the grandson of former Maharaja Bhawani Singh, was crowned king of the erstwhile Jaipur royal family on Wednesday in a traditional coronation ceremony.
Bhawani Singh, the last to ascend the throne before the privy purses and royal entitlements were abolished in 1971, died last week following prolonged illness. He had adopted Padmanabh, the son of his daughter Diya Kumari, in 2002 to be his successor. Youngest to ascend the Jaipur throne, Padmanabh is now the titular head of the royal family that is mired in legal disputes over the distribution of ancestral properties and inheritance.
The coronation ceremony, Raj Tilak, was performed at the City Palace. It was not open to the public, with erstwhile royals from princely states, Cabinet ministers Duru Miyan and Bina Kak, politicians Vasundhara Raje, Capt Amrinder Singh, Vinod Khanna and Alwar MP Bhanwar Jitendra Singh as the guests.
